Position Overview

The Council of Women World Leaders is an independent, self-governing network of current and former women Prime Ministers and Presidents established in 1996 by Vigdis Finnbogadottir, President of Iceland (1980-1996) and first woman in the world to be democratically elected president, and Laura Liswood, Secretary General. The Council of Women World Leaders is a network of 84 current and former Presidents and Prime Ministers. It is the only organization in the world dedicated to women heads of state and government. The Council of Women World Leaders Secretariat is hosted at the United Nations Foundation in Washington, D.C and is an affiliate of the UN Foundation.

The intern will gain a wide variety of communication skills, while writing formal documents and liaising with high level officials from around the world, and while managing the Council's social media accounts. The intern will also have the opportunity to work in event planning and will be able to be involved first-hand in sending out invitations, managing the logistics of an event as well as handling any follow up work that might be necessary. The intern will gain independence as they manage their own time and work and prioritize work as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Manage the social media platforms;
  • Update and maintain the website, database, and records;
  • Help organize virtual events including the drafting of concept notes, invitations, agendas and correspondence with Council members. In the Fall the intern will help organize the virtual Council workshops (part of the Nest partnership);
  • Plan the logistics of our annual meeting;
  • Coordinate with United Nations Foundation as needed;
  • Support research on various topics relevant to the Council;
  • Draft written communication with over 80 current and former female Prime Ministers and Presidents regarding the Council's events, press releases, partnerships, and initiatives;
  • Provide logistical support for the Secretary General;
  • Sets up monthly Council meetings, provides the agenda and runs the meeting.

Selection Criteria

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States;
  • Must be enrolled in a degree-granting program during the internship or must be a recent graduate (within 8 months of graduation) of a college or university;
  • Must be able to obtain school credit or external funding for this internship;
  • Must have a personal laptop computer and access to the Internet.
  • Must be available to work a maximum of 29 hours per week.
  • Must be detail-oriented, highly-motivated and globally-minded;
  • Strong interest in women's rights and leadership;
  • Must have strong organization, communication and writing skills;
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently on multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment;
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace Applications;
  • Knowledge of social media platforms (web design development is a plus).
